New Year = Empty Pages

“We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.” – Edith Lovejoy Pierce

First day of a New Year is time for reflection, taking stock of the year just gone and looking into the new year and pondering how we want it to look.

What we want to achieve, what healthy habits we want to start, what experiences we want to have and who the people are that we want to spend time with? What are the things, habits and people that make us feel good and happy?

Equally important is to work out what is draining us and keeping us from happiness. What don’t we want to spend time on, what negative habits do we need to change, what experiences do we want to avoid and are there people in our lives who are draining us of energy?

A year is a short time. By avoiding the negatives you can make more room for the positives in your life.

This time every year I have a habit of buying a new book, not a fiction book but a book that motivates me to take a new look at life and to touch base with my desire to grow as a human being.

During the year, I find it’s all so busy and just go, go, go to fit in all the must-do stuff. I tend to get pretty stressed and bogged down by all the daily and weekly tasks.

During the break over Christmas and New Year it’s crucial for me to  slow down, reflect and just be. To catch up with myself and consider not just what my goals for 2018 are, but maybe more importantly,  who I want to BE.

The book this year is BIG MAGIC Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert (the author who wrote Eat Pray Love which was subsequently made into a movie with Julia Roberst).

You’ve probably heard that for growth to happen we need to go outside our comfort zone. By definition comfort zone is where we feel safe and things are familiar. And nothing wrong with that, if you’re happy with life as it is, why not stay in the comfort zone? Leaving it is scary because we have to face the fear, we have to be brave and do things we are not used to, perhaps never done before.

But facing the fear and doing it anyway can be exhilarating, liberating and powerful. And if you keep at it your comfort zone will grow. With a bigger comfort zone you can ask The Universe for more. So this is a key to higher success and getting more out of life if that is what you desire.

I know that I want more out of life, not because I’m not happy – I am – but because I want to be more, do more, experience more in this beautiful world we live for just a short time.

Starting Dinner Sorted was amongst my top achievements in life. It definately took me out of my comfort zone. It was scary and exciting at the same time. But as time goes, what originally challenged us became familiar and comfortable. So also for me; it became daily, weekly and monthly habits to sustain the business, meaningful and enjoyable and at times still challenging, but not scary anymore because it’s within my new comfort zone.

So for me it’s time to break through my current comfort zone to expand it –  by doing scary new stuff  – for the business (and me) to grow to the next level.

So, this year I will fill my empty pages with a list of scary but exciting things to challenge myself in 2018. In fact, I have already started, blogging being on my “challenge list”. It is challenging, not just because of the time it takes to write each blog post but it’s a bit scary to; you kind of expose yourself by writing about what’s on your mind for anyone to read. Well, it’s now my challenge for 2018 and you’re my witness, will you also be my accountability partner? One blog post a month is my minimum commitment.

I would love to hear what challenges – to face your fears – you will set yourself for 2018. If you are happy to share, please comment below in this post.
